Lawn Watering Tips

Effective watering is the key to keeping your lawn looking good. Whilst steps like choosing drought-tolerant grasses can reduce the need for excessive watering, like any plant, your lawn needs water to stay looking lush.

How Do I Know When To Water My Lawn?

This is a common question for the team at Wide Bay Turf and it’s a good one to ask. If you wait until your lawn really looks parched, then the grasses will have already begun to suffer. Staying ahead of the game will help to avoid long-term stress on your lawn, so if you know the weather is going to be dry for a while, it’s time to get your watering game up to scratch.

What’s The Best Way To Water My Lawn?

As a rule, an irrigation system is the best way to water a lawn. This creates an even spread of water where hand watering with a can or hose can create a risk of under or overwatering in different patches.

It’s important to give your lawn a thorough soaking. One deep water is better than several shallow sprinkles. A proper soak encourages the roots of the grasses to grow deep. A quick splash keeps the roots at the surface which makes them more vulnerable to drying out.

The Best Time To Water Your Lawn

Timing is everything when it comes to watering. Water in the early morning or late at night to avoid scorching the grasses or losing too much water to evaporation.

How Often Should I Water My New Turf?

Newly laid turf should be watered as soon as each slab is laid to help the roots get established. It’s important to give the lawn a really good soaking to minimise the risk of the grasses drying out. After this first soak, consider working to the following regime.

  • First two weeks – water once or twice a day
  • Third and fourth weeks – water every other day
  • Fifth and sixth weeks – water twice a week

This can only be a guideline – if your grass is taking longer to establish and the roots are still not firm, then keep up the daily watering. Likewise, if the weather is hot, then you may need to continue the more frequent watering for a little longer.

How Often Should I Water An Established Lawn?

During the cooler months, your lawn may be quite happy to survive on natural rainfall. This will vary of course and if the temperature begins to rise above around 25 degrees and we experience a prolonged dry spell you may need to water your lawn regardless of the season. During warmer weather, you will probably need to water your lawn a couple of times a week to keep it in tip-top condition.

Can I Overwater My Lawn?

Once your lawn is established it’s possible to overwater, but in Hervey Bay’s warm climate this is unlikely. Simply check the moisture level of your lawn by poking a finger just below the surface - if the soil feels damp, then there’s no need to water.
